Sandy police said Sunday they have released the alleged gunman in a domestic shooting death without arresting him.

The man was found with a gun in his hand and taken in for questioning after the shooting about 3:15 p.m. Saturday at Windmill Cove Apartments, 9640 South and Brandy Spring Lane (150 West), said Sandy police Sgt. Jon Arnold.

Brendon Saunders, 41, was critically wounded in what police described as a domestic situation and he died at a hospital about 7 p.m.

The shooter wasn't formally arrested and was released about 9:30 p.m. The case will be screened with prosecutors for possible charges, but Arnold said officers won't release his name or the circumstances of the shooting until the Salt Lake County Attorney's Office examines the case.

"At this point we're not going to get into," how it happened, Arnold said.
