An 8-year-old Swiss girl remained in critical condition Sunday a day after the vehicle her family was in was broadsided by an ambulance in Hurricane.

Troopers said Serena Affolter, of Switzerland, remained unconscious and on breathing machines at University Medical Center in Las Vegas while tests were being conducted to determine the extent of the head injury she suffered Saturday in an accident that injured 11 people.

Troopers said a Hildale/Colorado City ambulance driven by Lizzie Barlow of Colorado City was westbound on State Route 9 about 7:50 p.m. transporting a stroke victim to Dixie Regional Medical Center. The ambulance had its lights and sirens on, troopers said.

Troopers said a southbound Dodge Caravan driven by Christian Affolter had entered the intersection on a green light at 3400 West in Hurricane in order to turn left when the ambulance ran the red light and T-boned the van.

Serena Affolter, a rear passenger on the driver's side, was critically injured. She wasn't breathing at first, but rescuers managed to get a pulse started before she was transported to Dixie Regional, troopers said. She was later flown by air ambulance to Las Vegas.

Daneila Affolter, the girl's mother and the front passenger, suffered a dislocated shoulder. She was expected to be released from the hospital Sunday. Nicola Affolter, 12, a rear passenger, suffered a lacerated spleen and remained at Dixie Regional. Christian Affolter suffered a cut to the head.

Stroke victim Ben Barlow suffered a cut to the head that required stitches.

Ben Barlow's wife, Martha, who was riding with him, and other paramedics were treated at Dixie Regional Medical Center and released.
