As crews contained one Wasatch County fire, a second blaze broke out Sunday afternoon just down the highway.

At about 6 p.m., a fire near Jordanelle Reservoir that caused the evacuation of about 250 residences — mostly vacation homes — was contained after burning 550 acres.

Janet Carson, spokeswoman for Wasatch County Fire, said the cause of the fire was undetermined but added because there were several start points along U.S. Highway 40 "we are assuming it is related to the highway, possibly a vehicle."

Meanwhile, another fire started Sunday afternoon in the Whiskey Springs area near Daniels Canyon, southeast of Heber City — this one human-caused.

Carson said crews were sent to Daniels Canyon about 1:30 p.m. after an individual called the Sheriff's Office to report accidentally starting the blaze on private property adjacent to forest service land while target shooting toward a metal target .

As of 9 p.m., the Daniels Canyon fire had burned more than 375 acres west of Highway 40 and was 0 percent contained, said Carson, adding that no structures were threatened.

Ground crews were fighting the base of the fire, while a helicopter and a tanker plane were attacking the upper portions, said Carson.

A forest service crew was scheduled to arrive Monday morning to help.

Highway 40 south of Heber was closed for two hours Sunday evening because of the fire. Carson suggested that travelers planning to go that way check with the Utah Department of Transportation to make sure the road has not been closed again.

Yet another fire, in Diamond Fork in Utah County, forced the evacuation of several campgrounds and trails.

The Red Ledges fire had burned about 300 acres on Red Mountain as of Sunday night, said Utah County sheriff's Lt. Tom Hodgson.

No structures were being threatened, but campgrounds and trails had been evacuated from Balsam Campground in Hobble Creek Canyon to Springville Crossing and east of Diamond Fork Campground. The Cottonwood Canyon, Three Forks and Fifth Water trails had been evacuated, Hodgson said.

The fire, reported at about 1 p.m., is believed to be human-caused; firefighters are investigating reports that a chainsaw sparked the blaze, Hodgson said.
