Every day in August, The Tribune staff will select a frozen confection for readers to try. We're tasting our way through ice cream, gelato, frozen yogurt, shave ice and any other treats that will help us beat the heat. Today's pick:

Shave ice • Not to be confused with a snow cone, this Hawaiian favorite is made with finely shaved ice that absorbs the flavored syrup more efficiently. Mo' Bettah Steaks offers 26 flavors, including lilikoi (passion fruit), li hing mui (dried plum), guava, cotton candy and bubble gum. Add-ons such as ice cream, li hing mui and azuki beans are available.

Mo' Bettah Steaks • 273 W. 500 South, Bountiful, 801-296-2928; 335 W. 1830 South, Salt Lake City, 801-366-3886; 2095 N. Main St., Logan, 435-787-8870.

Price • A softball-size "small" is $3 and includes up to three flavors; the "regular," which is half again the size of the small, is $3.50.

Shop talk • Mo' Bettah Steaks also offers traditional Hawaiian plate lunches — chicken, pork or steak with a variety of sauces; sticky rice; and macaroni salad.
