Ogden • What began as a blowout turned into a shootout as Eastern Washington outlasted Weber State 32-26 Saturday night at Stewart Stadium.
Behind surprise starter Vernon Adams, a redshirt freshman, EWU (2-1) burst out to a 20-3 halftime lead. The shifty Adams rushed for 49 yards and passed for 75.
Adams was removed from the game for an apparent injury to start the second half. While the No. 9-ranked Eagles continued to put points on the board, Weber State (0-4) exploded for 23 second-half points behind quarterback Mike Hoke.
However, EWU dominated the time of possession in the fourth quarter, including a 15-play drive that took up half of the period. Eventually, the Wildcats could not stop the Eagles, who ate up much of the clock with a punishing ground game.
Weber State had one last chance, but needed to travel 86 yards in less than 2 minutes with no time outs.
Eastern Washington gained nearly 500 yards of offense, while the Wildcats had nearly 400. WSU was also done in by more than 100 yards in penalties.
