After 18 months of construction and a good bit of anticipation, Scheels opened its 220,000-square-foot mega-sporting goods store at 9 a.m. Saturday in Sandy.

A pre-opening celebration started at 5 a.m. in the store's parking lot, with live music, games and free hats given to the first 2,500 people in line.

Featuring a 16-car Ferris wheel rising toward a skylight, a 16,000-gallon double-arched salt water aquarium, a boating department, game centers and a focus on fashionable apparel, the store is meant to be a fun destination, said Dan Hermanson, an assistant store leader.

Scheels is at 11282 S. State St., off I-15 (exit 292).
