David Foster's Utah basketball career is over after the redshirt senior center re-injured his already surgically repaired foot.

The 7-foot-3 Foster, who holds the school record for 219 career blocked shots, will undergo another surgery next week. He will miss the season and intends to pursue a professional career overseas once healthy again. He could technically apply for a sixth season of eligibility. But he has chosen not to do so and will begin the next phase of his life.

"I'm very disappointed to have to sit out another year at Utah," Foster said in a statement released Monday. "I will have surgery on my foot and I plan on continuing my career after this year."

Foster has been in the Utah basketball program since 2006. After playing his freshman season and going on an LDS Church mission, he was named the Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Year. One of the last holdovers from the Jim Boylen era, Foster excited the current coaching staff with his ability to block shots and serve as a last line of defense.

Without Foster's ability to anchor the middle, head coach Larry Krystkowiak will likely count on Jason Washburn to provide even more of a presence in the paint. With the Pac-12 Conference loaded with quality big men, Washburn will be expected to build on a solid junior season, when he averaged 11 points and six rebounds per game.

Foster's absence will also possibly mean an increased role for sophomore 7-footer Dallin Bachynski. Renan Lenz, a junior power forward originally from Brazil, will likely start and freshman forward Jordan Loveridge may spend more of his time at power forward.

"We are very disappointed for Dave, especially with all of the hard work he put in and the commitment he made to our program over the last couple of years," Krystkowiak said. "It's really a shame that he won't get a chance to play his senior year at Utah. Dave is a great leader for our young team and will continue to be involved with our program. We will see how he responds to the surgery and hopefully he can continue his basketball career in the future." —
