Wounded grizzly at large in eastern Idaho

Boise, Idaho • Authorities in eastern Idaho are still searching for a grizzly bear they believe is roaming the woods with a gunshot wound two weeks after a run-in with hunters.

Idaho Fish and Game officials say the bear was shot Sept. 22 by hunters trying to retrieve an elk in the woods in Fremont County.

The hunters say they fired at least 12 shots at the grizzly after the bear charged. The bear then left the scene, but left a small blood trail.

Investigators have posted warning notices and have assigned officers to patrol and alert the public.

Fish and Game officials say the encounter shows guns can turn a charging bear, but firearms also create lingering concerns if the bear is only wounded.

They say bear spray remains the most effective.
