Former Los Angeles Lakers basketball player Magic Johnson and HIV/AIDS advocate is the face of the first over-the-counter HIV test.

The test allows Americans to check themselves for the virus that causes AIDS in the privacy of their homes.

Orasure Technologies' says its OraQuick is the first and only rapid over the counter HIV test approved in the U.S.

In his role as product spokesman, Johnson, who tested positive for HIV in 1991, will help to increase "awareness about the importance of knowing your HIV status," according to a statement from the National Association of People with AIDS.
