Four Utah brewers win in Denver, but not Squatter's 'Red as Hell'

Four Utah brewers scored top prizes at this weekend's Great American Beer Festival in Denver.

Red Rock Brewery and Uinta Brewing Co. each scored gold medals: Red Rock won in the "experimental beer" category for its Red Rock Paardebloem, and Uinta's Bristlecone won in the "English-style mild ale" category.

Uinta scored two silver medals, in the "English-style summer ale" category for its Sum'r brand, and the "German-style Schwarzbier" category for its Baba beer. Red Rock's Red Rock Organic Zwickel Bier also won a silver medal, in the "Kellerbier or Zwickelbier" category.

Bronze medals went to: The Red Rock Nut Brown Ale, in the "American-style brown ale" category; Hoppers Grill & Brewing Co.'s This Is the Pilsener, in the "Bohemian-style pilsener" category; and Epic Brewing Co.'s Utah Sage Saison, in the "herb and spice beer" category.

The annual Denver beer contest got more than the usual amount of attention in Salt Lake City, courtesy of X96's "Radio From Hell" show. The show's hosts — Kerry Jackson, Bill Allred and Gina Barberi — ventured to Denver to root on Squatters "Red as Hell" Ale, the beer named in honor of the radio show. Alas, the Red as Hell Ale didn't medal in its category, and Squatters and the Utah Beer Cooperative (which have won often at the festival in past years) was denied in the other categories in which it entered.
