State colleges • Southern Utah University women's basketball team opens season with win over New Mexico Highlands

Cedar City • Southern Utah University's women's basketball team scored 26 points off 26 turnovers and shot 48 percent from the floor to beat New Mexico Highlands 83-62 in its season opener on Monday night.

The T-birds opened the game with a 13-2 run as sophomore guard Marquelle Funk knocked down her first two attempts from the outside. She led SUU with 18 points while connecting on 4 of 5 shots from behind the arc.

Women's soccer

UVU 5, Delaware State 0 • Utah Valley University scored three times in the first half and tacked on a pair more in the second as it defeated Delaware State in Orem.


Northern Arizona 3, SUU 0 • In Flagstaff, Ariz., Southern Utah University dropped a three-set match 25-15, 25-17, 25-22 at Northern Arizona.

Weber State 3, University of Texas-Pan American 1 • In Ogden, Weber State defeated University of Texas-Pan American in four sets, 25-20, 19-25, 25-21, 25-13.
