Salt Lake City police say what began as a robbery turned into a shootout that injured a suspect Tuesday in Sugar House.

One of perhaps four robbers went to a hospital with a bullet wound, said Salt Lake City police Lt. Bryce Johnson. Residents of the apartment near 2300 S. Green St., where the shooting occurred, were not injured.

About 3 p.m., a man, woman and child inside the apartment heard a knock. Johnson said they went to the door and saw someone they knew, opened the door and saw three other people waiting for them, at least some of whom had guns.

One of the residents also had a gun, Johnson said. A shootout ensued.

Johnson did not know the severity of the suspect's wound. Johnson said the suspect went to the hospital on his own and police found him there.

The residents' friend remained at the scene. Police are searching for the two remaining suspects.

Robert Brundige, who lives in a house next door to the apartment building, said he heard people arguing outside the building before any shots were fired.

Brundige said he went inside his house and sat down at his computer when, he estimated, five gunshots rang out.

One bullet went through his window and into his bathroom door, whizzing four to six inches above his head and raining glass and plaster in his hair, he said.

Brundige said he had also heard people arguing outside the apartment building around 3 or 4 a.m. Tuesday morning, but was unsure of who the people were or what the dispute was about.
