A man was in critical condition after the SUV he was driving slammed into the side of a semi-tractor rig about 11 a.m. Monday.

Salt Lake City police said the semi was northbound on Pioneer Road (2700 West) when the SUV, westbound on Director's Row, crashed into it.

The male driver of the SUV had to be extricated from the wreckage before being flown to the hospital in critical condition.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.

No further details were immediately released.
