Retiring Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff will join Troutman Sanders LLP, and will work in the international law firm's Washington, D.C., office.
A press release from the law firm note that Shurtleff — elected in 2000 as Utah's chief lawyer, and retiring from public office after three terms — is recognized as an expert in numerous cutting edge legal issues, including energy-related matters. Working with his colleagues on both sides of the political aisle, Shurtleff has won praise for fashioning workable solutions to a variety of problems, the press release said.
"Mark's addition will strengthen and enhance Troutman Sanders' state regulatory expertise in a number of areas, including privacy, data security, state consumer protection issues and matters involving the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau," said Ashley L. Taylor Jr., leader of the firm's state attorneys general team as well as its regulatory compliance and government litigation practice.
Taylor noted that Shurtleff's experience working with the other states through the National Association of Attorneys General will be of "tremendous value to the firm's clients, especially in multistate investigations."
The team Shurtleff is joining in January includes a former state attorney general, a former state solicitor general, a former deputy attorney general, as well as several former assistant attorneys general.
"I have been honored to serve the people of Utah for the past 12 years, so leaving public office was a difficult choice for me," Shurtleff was quoted as saying in the release. "But I am excited about the opportunity to join the country's leading state attorneys general team."
A graduate of Brigham Young University and the University of Utah College of Law, Shurtleff is past chairman of the Conference of Western Attorneys General and served several times on the executive committee for the National Association of Attorneys General. Troutman Sanders employs more than 600 lawyers and has offices throughout the United States and China. Founded in 1897, the firm's core practice areas are business law, energy and industry regulation, finance, litigation and real estate, according to the news release.
