The Cricket's Daily 3: A big bonanza for 'Les Misérables'

Here's what's being talked about today in pop culture:

• Christmas Day was good for the three movies that opened on the holiday: "Les Misérables" took in an astonishing $18.2 million, while "Django Unchained" raked in $15 million and "Parental Guidance" earned $6.5 million. [The Huffington Post]

• Is "The Amazing Spider-Man" killing off Peter Parker? Issue No. 700 of the iconic comic book is taking the web-slinger in a strange new direction. [Entertainment Weekly]

• Notable celebrity deaths over the Christmas holiday: Character actor Charles Durning, an Oscar nominee for "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" but also notable for roles in "Tootsie," "The Sting," "Dog Day Afternoon" and "The Muppet Movie," died at the age of 89; Jack Klugman, who starred in TV's "The Odd Couple" and "Quincy, M.E." (and was the last surviving cast member of Sidney Lumet's "12 Angry Men"), died at age 90; and Gerry Anderson, co-creator (with his wife Sylvia) of the marionette-based action series "Thunderbirds" and the sci-fi series "Space: 1999," died at the age of 83.
