Salt Lake County Mayor-elect Ben McAdams has hired U.S. Rep. Jim Matheson's longtime spokeswoman, Alyson Heyrend, to serve as his new communications director.

"It's a good move for her," Matheson said. "I hate to see it happen, but I can't say no."

Heyrend leaves Matheson's office after 12 years, working for the Democratic congressman since he was first elected in 2000.

Before that, she was a development director for the Nature Conservancy and a television news reporter at KTVX.

"I'm very honored to have her on board," McAdams said of the new hire. "Her experience and background and work in political communication is unparalleled, and I'm excited to have her on my team."

Michelle Schmitt, who had worked for Mayor Peter Corroon, will stay on as Heyrend's deputy communications director.
