The Utah Utes have announced the dismissal of Afa Bridenstine, a walk-on linebacker who was involved in an incident in September that led to Bridenstine's guilty plea for misdemeanor assault.
The freshman linebacker never played for the Utes.
"Needless to say, the report on Afa is very disappointing," Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said in a statement. "He has been dismissed from our team effective immediately."
The 24-year-old was sentenced to serve 18 months probation and 50 hours of community service, according to the Standard-Examiner.
Restitution was left open to give prosecutors more time to contact the 20-year-old victim, who was knocked unconscious by Bridenstine in September after Bridenstine believed the victim tried to run him off the road. Bridenstine punched the man after approaching him in a McDonald's parking lot.
Bridenstine must also take a cognitive thinking class to learn to control his anger.
