A west Salt Lake City man was behind bars Tuesday after allegedly beating a woman in front of a child and then refusing to let them leave.
Police say the incident occurred about 4:40 p.m. Monday at 527 N. Chicago (about 950 West) when an argument between the man and his female companion escalated to violence.
Police say the man assaulted the woman and prevented her from calling 911 or leaving the home. Eventually, she and the child managed to flee the residence and the woman called police.
Officers responded and took the man, a 29-year-old Mexican national, into custody without incident.
Placed under an Immigration and Customs Enforcement hold order Tuesday, he was booked on suspicion of first-degree felony aggravated kidnapping, third-degree felony counts of aggravated assault and domestic violence in the presence of a child, and two class B misdemeanor counts of criminal mischief.
