MLS • Real Salt Lake added another forward to its roster Wednesday, acquiring Ecuadorian attacker Joao Plata from Toronto FC in exchange for a second round pick in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft.

Plata, 20, has been playing in his native Ecuador after going on a six-month loan to LDU Quito in July. Toronto previously acquired Plata on loan from that very club before buying him outright last year.

The 5-foot-2 speedster scored 10 goals and added nine assists in 52 appearances for Toronto. Plata will travel with RSL to Irvine, Calif., Thursday for his first preseason training action with the team.

Yankees in talks to get DH Hafner

MLB • The Yankees are speaking with the agent for free agent Travis Hafner and may try to sign the 35-year-old to compete for time as a left-handed designated hitter.

Hafner spent the past decade with Cleveland and hit .228 with 12 homers and 34 RBIs last year. He would take over a role filled last year by Raul Ibanez, who left the Yankees to sign with Seattle.

• Shawn Kelley and the Seattle Mariners have agreed to a $935,000, one-year contract that avoids salary arbitration.

Griner breaks Big 12 scoring record

Women's college basketball • Baylor star Brittney Griner has broken the Big 12 women's career scoring record.

Griner scored the first four points in Wednesday night's game at Texas Tech, giving her 2,837 for her career. Oklahoma State's Andrea Riley was the record holder, scoring 2,835 points from 2007-2010.

The 6-foot-8 Griner hit a short jumper on Baylor's first possession, then made two foul shots.
