A 69-year-old man died Friday after he was hit first by an SUV and seconds later by a train in Provo.
Provo police Lt. Mathew Siufanua identified the victim as Douglas Crow, of Provo. He worked as a custodian at Brigham Young University and reportedly restored bicycles as a hobby.
Utah Transit Authority spokesman Steve Allnatt said the accident occurred at 7:33 a.m. near 500 West and 600 South. The man, in critical condition, was rushed to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center. Provo police confirmed the man died shortly thereafter.
Siufanua said it appeared Crow was struck and knocked off his bicycle onto the tracks by a Cadillac Escalade making a left turn from 600 South onto northbound 700 West.
"She [the driver] immediately pulled over. Then the [FrontRunner] barrier arms and flashing lights came on. [The victim] was dazed and moving, but was then hit by the train," Siufanua said.
Emergency workers administered CPR and rushed Crow to the hospital, but he was pronounced dead from severe head and other injuries.
The accidents remained under investigation. No citations were issued.
The fatality halted the Frontrunner train's service. UTA bused passengers to the next station in Orem until shortly before noon, when the scene was cleared for resumption of rail service.
