Richfield • All you can do is attack, attack and attack some more when you are down by nine points with 6 minutes, 33 seconds to play.

And that's what Piute did to earn a spot in Saturday's 5 p.m. girls' Class 1A state championship game against St. Joseph with a 58-55 win over Layton Christian on Friday.

"We have been working for this game for the whole season, and when we finally got here, we didn't want to lose it," said Kierra Gleave, who finished with 14 points and whose free-throw shooting in the fourth quarter and overall hustle fueled the comeback.

Whitney Westwood's 18 points and Tori Gass' 12 helped Piute overcome a 28-point effort by Layton Christian's Teneshia Davison.

"That's kind of the way we played the whole year," Piute coach Wade Westwood said. "We like to spot a team. I don't know why we do that. Then we finally get rolling. The man-to-man press kind of put us over the top. I think we kind of wore out Layton Christian."
