Tom Raum's AP story "Americans hate taxes, love spending, survey shows" (Tribune, March 9) reports the results of the most recent General Social Survey by the independent research organization NORC at the University of Chicago.

The survey underscores the perennial disconnect of Americans between taxes and federal budget realities.

Until we learn to vote for candidates who have the courage to tell hard truths rather than pandering with more promises of government largess, we're doomed to ever-escalating public debt and the inevitable economic collapse to which it leads.
