This week, conservative talk show host Bill O'Reilly shocked listeners by supporting gay marriage:
"The compelling argument is on the side of homosexuals. … 'We're Americans, we just want to be treated like everybody else.' … And to deny that, you've got to have a very strong argument on the other side. And the other side hasn't been able to do anything but thump the Bible. … New York has [gay marriage] now. … I'm fine with it. I want all Americans to be happy, I do."
Wow! If O'Reilly thinks that the conservative arguments against gay marriage don't stand up, the war is over (although a few battles will still be fought). There will always be a few leftovers who will never admit it, just like Southerners who continued to fight the Civil War long after it ended. But such foot-dragging isn't constructive.
The constructive thing is to move on and work to build a united nation of strong families, gay and straight.
