Provo driver admits knocking cyclist into path of commuter train

A 49-year-old Provo woman charged with negligent homicide for her role in a fatal Feb. 15 FrontRunner commuter train accident pleaded guilty Thursday.

Maria Fregoso-Avina was charged in 4th District Court with negligent homicide, a class A misdemeanor, improper lookout, a class C misdemeanor and operating an unsafe or improper vehicle on a public highway, a class C misdemeanor.

On Thursday, she pleaded guilty to the negligent homicide charge and the class C misdemeanors were dismissed.

Fregoso-Avina faces up to a year in jail when she is sentenced April 11.

Prosecutors say the woman had not properly cleared ice from her SUV's windshield when she struck 69-year-old Douglas Crow.

The collision knocked Crow, who worked in the Physical Facilities custodial shop at Brigham Young University, off his bicycle and onto the tracks, where an approaching FrontRunner train ran over him.

Police say that Fregoso-Avina did pull over and stop after the collision. Crow was pronounced dead shortly after being rushed to a hospital.

Crow is survived by his wife, Nellie Crow, and their seven children.
