The videotape, broadcast Tuesday on ESPN, prompted scores of outraged social media comments as well as sharp criticism from New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie .
Athletic director Tim Pernetti was given a copy of the video in late November by a former employee. He suspended Rice for three games a month later, fined him $50,000 and ordered him to attend anger management classes. Pernetti said Tuesday that university president Robert Barchi also viewed the tape last fall and agreed with the punishment.
Tubby takes reins at Texas Tech
College basketball • Texas Tech introduced Tubby Smith as its coach on Tuesday. Smith was fired by Minnesota last week after six seasons and landed his new job Monday. He takes over a program that hasn't had a winning conference record since 2006-07, and one that went 19-43 the past two seasons. The Red Raiders last went to the NCAA Tournament in 2007.
"It's my goal to build this program into one of the top programs, not just in the Big 12 but in the country, and that's not going to be easy," the 61-year-old Smith said. "It's going to be hard work."
Interim coach Chris Walker went 11-20 this season after the September resignation of Billy Gillispie.
