The host Ontario Reign beat the Utah Grizzlies 5-2 on Monday in their ECHL playoff opener.

The second-seeded Reign took a quick three-goal lead and held on for a 1-0 edge in the best-of-seven series. Game 2 is Wednesday in Ontario, with Game 3 on Friday night at the Maverik Center.

Ryan Howse scored Utah's first goal at the 8:29 mark of the first period, and David Eddy's second-period goal cut the Reign's lead to 3-2. But Ontario's Kyle Kraemer scored the final two goals of the game.

Utah's starting goalkeeper, Ben Meisner, gave up three goals in the first 6:06.
