While terrorism at the Boston Marathon deserves wide coverage, the most significant story of the week was the clear-cut finding by a bipartisan commission linking top U.S. leaders to the use of torture ("Report: U.S. resorted to torture after 9/11 terror," Tribune, April 17).
The commission also found that there was "no firm or persuasive evidence" that torture yielded beneficial information.
The panel implicated both President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. Because we Americans would demand a war crimes tribunal for any foreign leaders who had authorized the torture of Americans, we must do the same when our own leaders are involved.
Surely we can expect to see Sens. Orrin Hatch, Mike Lee and other Utahns standing in the forefront of those insisting that all responsible parties be brought to justice. After all, we are a moral people who believe in honoring and obeying the law.
Yes, conviction and imprisonment of Bush and Cheney would be a huge embarrassment for America. But on the bright side, it might actually reduce the chances of Cheney ever again being invited to speak at Brigham Young University.
