Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, commenced at sundown, April 6. At the Jewish Community Center, Gov. Gary Herbert read a proclamation designating the week as "Days of Remembrance" in Utah.
Several Holocaust survivors were in attendance, as well as their families and friends. Utah World War II veterans, local rabbis, Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker and Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams joined in the commemoration.
Local schoolchildren read personal essays and poetry. A children's choir sang what can't be spoken. A survivor of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda gave eloquent expression to the pledge that each of us should heed: "Never again."
