An Orem woman's body was discovered Wednesday after her car went off the road in Diamond Fork Canyon.
Surveillance video from a Bureau of Reclamation facility showed Heidi Bascom, 33, drove into the canyon about 6 p.m. Tuesday, said Utah County sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon. The canyon, which branches off of Spanish Fork Canyon, is a "windy, windy road," he added.
Investigators aren't positive how it happened, but somehow Bascom's four-door sedan went off the road after a 15-minute drive into the canyon.
The car took a "rough ride" down the side of the road, and Bascom, who wasn't wearing her seat belt, died, Cannon said.
Scuff marks on the road show she may have failed to negotiate a turn. Alcohol may have contributed to the crash — but that can't be confirmed until the toxicology report comes back in a few weeks, Cannon said.
People in the area on Wednesday saw her car in the Diamond Fork River — which is really more of a stream, Cannon clarified — and called 911 shortly before 11 a.m. Emergency responders found her body, which has since been taken to the state medical examiner.
