A 30-year-old man was in custody Monday night after leading Utah Highway Patrol officers on a chase along Interstate 15 that ended after police spiked his tires near Springville.

Troopers were alerted to a reckless pickup truck driver in the southbound lanes of I-15 near Orem about 9:15 p.m., UHP Cpl. Todd Johnson said. Officers gave chase, but the driver failed to stop, although he never traveled faster than posted highway speeds. Officers chased the truck for more than 10 miles, laying down spikes near the 400 South exit in Springville.

The driver of the truck pulled over after crossing the spikes and stopped the car.

The man's passenger immediately got out of the truck and surrendered to trooper. The driver was unresponsive to commands to exit the vehicle, but troopers later determined it was because the man had passed out behind the wheel after stopping the vehicle.

Johnson did not know if the man was under the influence of alcohol or another controlled substance. He was arrested and was to be booked into jail.

The passengers was questioned and released, Johnson said.

The incident temporarily closed both the north and southbound lanes of the interstate while officers took the pair into custody. Both lanes had reopened by 10:30 p.m.

The incident remained under investigation Monday night.
