Park City scored the first two goals of the game before Skyline rallied for four straight scores. The Eagles extended the lead to 8-4 early in the second half before the Miners answered with three straight goals. Park City cut the deficit to one goal three times in the second half, but it couldn't reclaim the lead.
"Every time we play these guys, it's been one or two goals difference," Skyline coach Elise Caffee said. "They beat us twice at tournaments, so we were gunning for them all season. The girls always work hard. It's like the stars aligned for us."
Maddie Haynes' third goal of the game brought Park City within 10-9 with 1 minute, 10 seconds remaining in the game. Caitlin Jarratt won the ensuing draw at midfield and sprinted downfield with the ball only to lose possession near the net. Skyline proceeded to pass around the ball and run out the clock.
While both teams had their share of scoring opportunities, Skyline was more aggressive in front of the net. The Eagles attacked often, creating free position shots and converting them. Park City, meanwhile, methodically worked the ball around the net trying to put itself in the best position to score.
"We got more of a lead in the second half, which helped us," Caffee said. "Then it started to get close again. If we kept strong, time would run out on them."
Miklain Huntsman and Anna Ferreira both scored twice for the Eagles, while Zoe Aldous and Claire Andrues had one apiece. Glenn, Huntsman, Ferreira and Andrues each notched an assist, and Madison Simonich earned the win in goal.
"I remember being in eighth grade and seeing us lose in the championship game," recalled Glenn, who plans to play at Bowdoin College in Maine. "Then we lost in the quarterfinals three straight years. Now to win it, it's amazing."
McKenna Tychsen had two goals for the Miners, while Jarratt, Natalie Frost, Alex Miele and Katy Miele each had one. It was the second straight championship game loss for Park City, which lost to Bingham last season.
American Fork defeated Lehi 11-7 in the Division II title game earlier in the day.
