Two teenaged girls remained hospitalized Monday after being injured in a head-on collision over the weekend in Magna.
Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said a 17-year-old girl, who was driving an Oldsmobile Alero that inexplicably crossed into oncoming traffic 1:45 p.m. Sunday on 8400 West near 3700 South, remained in serious condition at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray.
A 14-year-old girl, who was passenger in a Ford F-150 pickup truck hit by the Alero, had been taken to Pioneer Valley Hospital in West Valley City in critical condition. She was upgraded Monday to serious and transferred to Primary Children's Medical Center in Salt Lake City.
The crash killed the 14-year-old girl's mother, 37-year-old Jodi M. Bailey, who also was a passenger in the truck being driven by her 40-year-old husband. He sustained minor injuries, UPD said.
Hoyal said a 17-year-old girl was northbound when she suddenly swerved across several lanes of traffic and collided head-on with the pickup.
Hoyal said investigators continued to look into the cause of the crash, including whether the 17-year-old girl may have been distracted, but there were no initial indications of drugs or alcohol being factors.
Once the investigation is completed, UPD will turn the case over to the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office to screen possible charges.
