Divers on Sunday recovered the body of one of two women missing since a boat crash Thursday on Lake Powell.
Shortly after 7 p.m., the Utah Highway Patrol dive team found the body of Valerie Bradshaw, 29, about 340 feet below the surface, according to a news release from the Kane County Sheriff's Office. The Lake Powell dive team retrieved her body with a submersible robot.
"Because it was so late by the time Valerie was recovered, search efforts were suspended for the night," according to the release. The team will return to the same area Monday in hopes of finding the body of 22-year-old Jessica Jackman.
Bradshaw and Jackman were passengers on a motorboat driven by Jackman's father, Adrian Jackman, during a family trip on Thursday. The South Jordan man may have been distracted by children onboard when the boat was moving toward a houseboat near the Dangling Rope Marina, Kane County Sheriff's Sgt. Alan Alldredge wrote in a news release.
He veered at the last minute but still struck the front corner of the houseboat, Alldredge wrote. The motorboat overturned with 13 people on board: seven adults and six children.
Marilyn Jackman, 57, Jessica Jackman's mother, also died in the crash.
A National Park Service dive team on Friday used a submersible robot with a camera to search the area, but malfunctions to the sonar after 2 p.m. curtailed the effort for the day. Utah Department of Public Safety divers took over the search on Saturday with their own sonar technology.
The purpose of the dive team was to locate potential targets, which could be the women's bodies, and mark the locations with GPS coordinates. The National Park Service then uses its robot to investigate the spot and retrieve the body.
Bradshaw's body was being moved to Wahweap Marina, where it will be taken to the Kane County Sheriff's Office's medical investigator, Alldredge wrote in a Sunday night news release.
Her family has tentatively scheduled her funeral for Saturday at their Sandy LDS ward.
Friends of the families have set up a joint account at Zions Bank, called The Jackman/Bradshaw Family Donations, said Jack McDonald, the bishop of Bradshaw's LDS ward. People can donate at any branch location.
