A day after she allegedly dropped a bundle of Bank of Utah cash when a hidden red dye pack exploded, a female bank robbery suspect was behind bars.
Salt Lake City police Detective Mike Hamideh said the 44-year-old woman called 911 just before 9 p.m. Tuesday. She told dispatchers that she wanted to surrender in connection with the 1 p.m. Monday holdup of the bank branch at 711 S. State St.
Officers picked her up without incident at a motel in the 700 West block of North Temple Street a short time later.
She was being held Wednesday in Salt Lake County Jail without bail on suspicion of first-degree felony aggravated robbery and class B misdemeanor counts of threats against life or property, failure to appear at an unrelated Ogden court hearing, and a theft of services charge out of South Salt Lake.
The woman had entered the bank about 1 p.m. Monday. She approached a teller, handed her a note claiming she had a handgun, and demanded and received money. She then fled the building on foot.
However, as she sprinted northbound toward 200 East, the woman dropped the money when a red dye pack secreted inside the stash exploded. That, according to police, is when two men gathered up the cash, allegedly intending to keep it.
The two 22-year-old men — literally,"red handed" — were arrested and booked into Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of evidence tampering.
