An Orem man died Saturday night after police said he crashed his speeding motorcycle along University Parkway.
Orem police Lt. Craig Martinez said a Utah County deputy was eastbound near 400 West when he spotted Jal M. Oomrigar, 27, coming up behind him at a high rate of speed and crossing between vehicles.
Martinez said Oomrigar spotted the deputy and slowed down, so the deputy decided not to pull him over.
But then, Martinez said, the motorcyclist took off at speeds in excess of 90 mph. The deputy did not pursue him because of the high speeds involved, but alerted other nearby officers to the situation, Martinez said.
As the deputy crested a nearby hill, Martinez said, he spotted a commotion near State Street and realized the biker had crashed.
Witnesses said Oomrigar attempted unsuccessfully to pass between two vehicles and struck the back of one of them.
The impact threw the man, who was not wearing a helmet, from the bike. Oomrigar was pronounced dead about 8 p.m.
No one else was injured.
