Tennis • Roger Federer lost to a low-ranked opponent for the third straight tournament, his new and larger racket failing him Thursday in a 6-3, 6-4 defeat to Germany's Daniel Brands in the second round of the Swiss Open in Gstaad, Switzerland.
Playing on clay and before home fans, Federer was troubled by the serve and big forehand of his 55th-ranked opponent. Federer's other losses in the past month were to players ranked No. 116 (Sergiy Stakhovsky, at Wimbledon) and No. 114 (Federico Delbonis, at Hamburg, Germany).
The 31-year-old Swiss star is now ranked No. 5, his lowest in a decade.
Hockey Hall of Famers announced
Hockey • Doug Weight, Bill Guerin, Peter Karmanos, Ron Mason and Cindy Curley are headed for the United States Hockey Hall of Fame, USA Hockey announced on Thursday.
Guerin was a two-time Stanley Cup champion and four-time NHL All-Star. He and Weight helped the U.S. win silver at the 2002 Olympics. Weight won a Stanley Cup and was a four-time NHL All-Star.
Karmanos owns the Carolina Hurricanes and the Ontario Hockey League's Plymouth Whalers. Mason led Michigan State to the 1986 national championship.
