To deal with a large influx of adoptable felines, the Humane Society of Utah is deeply discounting adoption fees for kittens and cats through August.

Effectively immediately the adoption fee for kittens (7 months and younger) is $25 (normally $70). The maximum adoption fee for cats is $5 (normally $50).

As always the adoption fee for "senior citizen" cats, 6 years and older, will continue to be waived.

All feline adoptions include vaccinations along with spay/neuter procedures. Many cats are already microchipped.

The Humane Society said it is seeing the effects of "kitten season," receiving almost 500 felines this month alone.

The society, in Murray at 4242 S. 300 West, is open for adoptions Monday to Saturday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.

The Humane Society of Utah encourages owners of unwanted kittens to take them to a shelter, where they can obtain free or low-cost spaying and neutering assistance. It also encourages adoptions from shelters rather than kitten giveaways to motivate owners of breeding cats to have their animals spayed or neutered.
