College football • The NCAA rule connected to Penn State's sanctions that had the earliest impact on the football program is set to expire Thursday.
School officials say the rule allowing Nittany Lions to transfer without having to sit out a year elapses Aug. 1.
On that front at least, Penn State is back on a level playing field with other FBS schools a year after the NCAA levied its landmark penalties for the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.
Athletic director Dave Joyner said Thursday represents an emotional milestone for the program.
Singles players get U.S. Open raises
Tennis • All singles players at the U.S. Open are getting a big raise this year, from the record $2.6 million each champion will take home, to the $32,000 for everyone losing in the first round.
The U.S. Tennis Association announced the breakdown of its across-the-board prize money overhaul at the Grand Slam tournament Wednesday, four months after saying it would add more than $8 million to the pool.
The total payout, including per diems for players, will be $34.3 million, up from $25.5 million in 2012. That's an increase of about 35 percent overall.
Franklin gets third win in Barcelona
Swimming • Missy Franklin claimed her third gold medal of the world swimming championships with a victory in the 200-meter freestyle. It was the most significant freestyle win of Franklin's career.
Franklin gave up her bid to win eight golds in Barcelona, scratching the 50 back so she could focus on the 200 free. That decision paid off Wednesday night when she touched first in 1 minute, 54.81 seconds.
Italy's Federica Pelligrini took the silver, 0.33 behind the winner, and France's Camille Muffat claimed bronze.
