The purpose of the exercise is to train the agriculture community to quickly identify and contain a foreign animal disease with the goal of preventing it from spreading to other livestock, threatening human health and entering the food system. Horse owners are asked to bring their animals so veterinarians can draw blood from them as part of an investigative follow-up to a 2001 outbreak of equine infectious anemia in the Uintah Basin.
