The 39-year-old singer-songwriter Jewel (who was born in Payson) released her first greatest-hits album earlier this year, which traced her evolution from earnest folkie to pop starlet to country siren and back again.

"It was neat to see the development over the years," said the yodeling soprano in a Tribune interview.

After her performance at Deer Valley, she has a busy winter ahead of her, with a new gig as a judge on NBC's a cappella talent show "The Sing-Off" as well as her first holiday album, "Let It Snow," featuring two new songs from Jewel as well as other holiday classics.

With "Let It Snow," due in November, she said she wanted the recording to sound much like her modern-day classic debut album, "Pieces of You," with a folk-pop sound that bears classical influences. The holiday album, Jewel said, is "one of my favorite albums."

As for her role replacing Sara Bareilles as a judge on "The Sing-Off," Jewel said that she will "just be myself. I don't see myself being mean." That's the Utahn in her talking.
