Dalton leads U. to five-set win over USU

Shelby Dalton smashed a game-high 19 kills to lead Utah over Utah State in five sets Friday in both teams' college volleyball season opener at the Huntsman Center.

Morgan Odale had a game-high 23 digs, and Erin Redd-Brandon tallied 12 blocks and 11 kills for the Utes, who won 25-19, 21-25, 25-18, 21-25, 15-8.

Rachel Orr had 16 digs and a team-high 15 kills for the Aggies.

Creighton 3, BYU 1 • The No. 13-ranked Cougars lost their season opener against the No 25-ranked Bluejays, 22-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-15 during the Hampton Inn Invitational in Bowling Green, Ohio.

Alexa Gray and Tambre Haddock each had 11 kills for BYU.

Arizona State 3, Utah Valley 0 • The Pac-12 Sun Devils swept the Wolverines — 25-21, 25-18, 25-10 — in both teams' season opener in Orem.

Weber State 3, Grand Canyon 2 • Megan Bean had 13 blocks and Audrey Biggs hit a team-high 14 kills to help lead the Wildcats to a 23-25, 25-19, 16-25, 25-23, 15-9 win during the Wildcat Weekend tournament.

Weber State 3, Seattle University 0 • The Wildcats improved to 2-0 with their second win Friday, sweeping the Redhawks 25-21, 25-20, 25-21 behind a 34-assist performance by Whitney Hunt.

Georgia Southern 3, Southern Utah 0 • In Mobile, Ala., the Thunderbirds lost their season-opening game — 25-22, 25-17, 25-17.

Kylie Schofield had a team-high 12 kills for the Thunderbirds.

Vanguard 3, Westminster 2 • The Griffins lost their first match — 22-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-23 — at the Wyndham Labor Day Tournament in Irvine, Calif.

Westmont 3, Westminster 0 • Alexis Aalona smashed 14 kills and Jovana Sisovic had 13 for the Griffins (3-3), who lost their second match Friday at the Wyndham Labor Day Tournament, 21-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-23.

SLCC 3, MSU-West Plains 0 • The sixth-ranked Bruins swept eighth-ranked Missouri State University-West Plains, 25-23, 25-17, 25-22 at the SLCC Invitational Tournament.

SLCC 3, Central Arizona 1 • Bailee Kendall followed up her 15-kill performance against MSU-West Plains by smashing 21 kills in the Bruins' 25-20, 29-27, 20-25, 32-30 win in the SLCC Invitational Tournament.

SLCC is 3-3.

Women's soccer

Utah 0, Cal State Fullterton 0 • Lindsey Luke made seven saves to help the Utes (1-0-2) earn a draw on the road.

Utah State 1, UTEP 0 • Kylie Dibb scored in the 47th minute and Jeannie Woller made five saves to help the Aggies (3-0) stay unbeaten this season.

UTEP (2-1-0) outshot Utah State 12-6.

Southern Utah 3, Vermont 1 • Brianne Brown scored two goals and Breanna Brown also scored as the Thunderbirds (2-0-1) outshot the Catamounts 24-8 at the Colorado College Invitational in Colorado Springs.

Men's soccer

Bellevue (Neb.) 2, Westminster 0 • The Griffins (2-1) lost their first game of the season, allowing a goal in each half at Dumke Field.

Women's golf

Utah Valley won the Wildcat Invitational on Friday. UVU finished at 296, followed by Weber State (298), SUU (305) and Idaho State (326).
