Apple on Tuesday introduced the latest version of its popular iPhone smartphone, a new iteration that has a fingerprint sensor for security, a faster processor, a new operating system and a better camera for low-light pictures.

Company CEO Tim Cook also debuted a low-cost iPhone, the iPhone 5C, that will be similar to the current iPhone 5 in specifications but come in a plastic backing and in multiple colors.

The new iPhone 5S and 5C will go on sale Sept. 20. Pre-orders will begin Friday. The iPhone 5S will cost from $199 to $399, with a two-year contract depending on the storage size, which will come in 16, 32 and 64 gigabytes.

The iPhone 5S will come in three colors: black, white and a new gold or champagne color. The fingerprint sensor, called Touch ID, is located in the phone's home button and is used to unlock the phone and to make authorized purchases, such as through iTunes, without having to input a passcode.

The phone also will have a speedier processor that Apple says is 40 times faster than the original iPhone that was introduced in 2007. "This is the most forward-thinking phone we've ever created," said Apple Vice President Phil Schiller.

Donald Mustard, the creative director of Salt Lake City-based video game developer, Chair Entertainment, appeared on stage to show off the new phone's graphical power with the studio's latest game. Mustard announced that "Infinity Blade III," the last chapter in a trilogy of games for the iPhone and iPad, would come out the same time as the phone.

The iPhone 5S also will have a bigger camera sensor for better pictures and will now be capable of shooting slow-motion video at 120 frames per second. It also will have a dual LED flash to produce pictures in low light with more color accuracy.

Apple also announced a low-cost iPhone that will replace the current iPhone 5. The iPhone 5C will sell for $99 for a 16-gigabyte model and $199 for a 32-gigabyte model (with a two-year contract) and will have similar technical specifications as the current iPhone 5. It will have the same 4-inch Retina Display touchscreen and A6 processor. But the new phone also will have a slightly larger battery for longer battery life, and it will have a better FaceTime camera for video conferencing.

The iPhone 5C is made of a hard-coated polycarbonate and will come in multiple colors including green, yellow, white, blue and red.

One of the biggest upgrades to the phone isn't in the hardware but in the software. Apple announced that the new version of the iPhone's operating system, which also is for the iPad, will be available for download Sept. 18.

The new software, called iOS 7, is a major redesign of the interface with many new features including a 3D-like home screen, the ability to access the notifications screen from the phone's lock screen and a new radio service called "iTunes Radio."

But what may end up being a disappointment for Apple fans is that Cook did not introduce new versions of other Apple products at its Tuesday event. Many had hoped that the company would announce new refreshes of its iPod music player line, its MacBook Pro laptops and a release date for its new Mac Pro professional desktop computer.
