We Butter the Bread With Butter

Spotlight Show • Visa problems have prevented the German electronic-metal band We Butter the Bread With Butter from starting their first-ever United States tour, so the Salt Lake City show should be the band's first show in North America — provided everything was resolved earlier this week. Marcel Neumann, guitarist and founder of the German band, said between the group's 2010 album and 2013's "Goldkinder," each band member found growth. "We got so much experience, we played so much live," he said in a phone call from a German airport. "We tried to put all of those experiences into the record." Neumann and the band wanted the record to sound different from previous records, describing his goal as creating "rock as heavy as metal, and melodic as pop." Changing the sound can be problematic, he acknowledged. "It'd a lie if I said we didn't talk about it in the studio," Neumann said. But, ultimately, after recording more than 80 songs for this album, they are satisfied. "If it doesn't sound good to us, we wouldn't want to give it to the fans," he said.
