A man, apparently relaxing on a bench in a Salt Lake City park, was badly beaten Sunday.

Salt Lake City police reported the 32-year-old man said he was sitting on the bench in Poplar Grove Park, near 1040 West and 830 South, about 5:15 p.m. when a group of males approached him and asked for a cigarette.

The men then began assaulting the man and stole his wallet and cell phone, police said.

The victim went to the hospital for treatment and was admitted. Police said he was "pretty beat up" during the assault.

He was not able to provide officers with a description of his assailants.
