Need for speed?

In an age when the speed limits should be reduced because of gas consumption and to reduce damage and injury in accidents, I see that the speed limits are being increased to 80 mph in some parts of Utah ("Utah adds 289 miles of roads with 80 mph speed limits," Tribune, Sept. 17).

I remember when the mandatory use of seat belts was implemented, the hue and cry was "If it saves one life then it is all worth it."

I wonder how many lives will be lost at these high speeds. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure the results of mass in motion at high speeds.
