Improved play from the secondary, solid offensive showing (at least enough to win) and a run defense that played like its old self. All those elements translated into another Utah win over the BYU Cougars Saturday. You have to give credit to Utah coach Kyle Whittingham who has now won nine of the 12 meetings against the Cougars, he certainly seems to have BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall's number. Whittingham spent a lot of time working with the secondary this week in practice. While there is still a lot of room for improvement, the level of play was definitely better. Also better was Utah's front, which allowed 183 rushing yards but was excellent in the red zone. Give the Utes an 'A' all around for the victory, which had special meaning, Whittingham acknowledged. So much for this rivalry counting as "just another game." "You don't want this one to linger," Whittingham said, thinking of the prospect of Utah having to dwell on a BYU loss for two years. That is BYU's task instead. As for the Utes, their celebration will continue into the bye week. "We played our hearts out," quarterback Travis Wilson said. "It's an awesome feeling to win this game." - Lya Wodraska
