A Utah Highway Patrol trooper spotted a stolen car early Wednesday morning, and then things got wild.

UHP Cpl. Todd Johnson said the trooper saw the car about 5 a.m. near 500 West and 200 South in downtown Salt Lake City. When he ran a license plate check it showed up as stolen, and a short time later the trooper saw the vehicle pull into a parking lot at 250 South and Rio Grande.

Spotting the UHP cruiser approaching, the suspect put the car into reverse and sped from the scene, crashing at the intersection of 200 West and 400 South. The suspect jumped from the car and fled on foot into the dark.

A subsequent search of the area by UHP and Salt Lake City police officers failed to find the suspect.

Police did not immediately provide a description of the suspect, but asked anyone with information on the case to call 801-799-3000.
