Salt Lake City police are inviting 25 civilians to join officers for three days during its Citizens' Academy in November.

The free workshop provides "an inside look at the job of a police officer," according to a press release.

Instructors will take participants through simulated scenarios and use-of-force training, as well as hands-on demonstrations of K9 use, speed enforcement and firearms shooting with a SWAT team. Attendees also will learn about the structure of the department and unit responsibilities.

The three-night course will take place 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6; 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7; and 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8.

The course is free of charge.

Applications are available for download at the department's website, slcpd.com/community/citizens-academy/ and will be accepted in the order they are received. Participants must be 18, live or work in Salt Lake City proper and pass a background check.
