men's basketball • Saint Mary's coach Randy Bennett must serve a five-game suspension and won't be allowed to recruit off campus this season as the NCAA has upheld penalties against the successful mid-major program for recruiting violations. In March, the NCAA put Saint Mary's on four years of probation for a "failure to monitor its men's basketball program," reducing scholarships by two for the 2014-15 and 15-16 seasons.

Tar Heels coach Hatchell ailing

women's basketball • North Carolina coach Sylvia Hatchell has been diagnosed with leukemia. In a release from the school Monday, Hatchell said she would temporarily step away from her coaching duties to focus on treatment. Hatchell, 61, was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame last month. She's preparing for her 28th season with the Tar Heels and has 908 career victories.

Franchitti has second surgery

auto racinG • Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti underwent a second surgery Monday on his right ankle, which he broke in an Oct. 6 accident on the last lap of the Grand Prix of Houston. He also fractured two vertebrae and suffered a concussion. IndyCar orthopedic consultant Terry Trammel said Monday's surgery lasted just over three hours and was to repair the talus bone in Franchitti's ankle.

14 El Salvador players banned

soccer • FIFA has given worldwide lifetime bans to 14 El Salvador national team players who already had been suspended by their federation for match-fixing. The case involves four international matches, including El Salvador's 2-1 loss in an exhibition against the United States in 2010. The El Salvador federation shut down the senior national team last month.
