A 53-year-old man remained in critical condition Monday, the day after his pickup truck and trailers toppled and crashed on northbound Interstate 15 about 8 miles south of Cedar City.

The Utah Highway Patrol said driver Mark Oliver's wife, Sara Oliver, 50, died at the scene of the 9:20 p.m. Sunday accident near mile post 49. A child, 12-year-old Emma Oliver, was in serious condition at a local hospital. All are from Cedar City, UHP Cpl. Todd Johnson said.

Mark Oliver was flown to a hospital in Las Vegas with life-threatening injuries, but was able to tell troopers at the accident scene that he was hauling two trailers — the first a travel trailer and the second one made from an old truck bed, loaded with two 4-wheeler ATVs — when the second trailer began to swerve.

Oliver told UHP that when he applied his brakes, he lost control and the pickup and trailers toppled off the right side of the freeway.

Emergency workers had to extricate all three occupants from the wreckage.

Traffic was detoured around the accident scene for about two hours, UHP said.
